Commissioning a Portrait
Ordering is a straight forward process and very informal.
Firstly fill out the form on the contact page, outlining your brief requirements.
I will then get back to you so we can discuss further.
This is where the fun begins! I can then advise you on options based on your dogs breed, occasion, size required and budget.
Step One – Decision Time
One of the great things about commissioning a portrait is that you get to choose everything – it’s completely bespoke.
Which medium do you prefer?
Graphite Pencils
Graphite Pencils capture an incredible amount of detail, giving quite an romantic feel to a portrait. Even though there is an absence of colour it makes you concentrate on the tones, details and form of the animal in question. Perfect for all animals, long or short coated, graphite pencil portraits are a very popular choice.
Coloured Pencil
Polychromos – If you prefer some colour the polychromos are a great option again giving a soft appearance and a high level of detail.
Watercolours
One of my favourites, I use gouache mainly which is such a versatile medium. Watercolour is a traditional medium for artists and has been used for hundreds of years. The paint is added layer upon layer to create depth, its fluid nature enables truly realistic results.
Oils
The ultimate medium to work with, giving a rich dramatic feel to any painting. Framed without glass, oils are varnished to give a protective layer . Once dried the surface can the be touched and protects your painting from dust and dirt. It also even out the painting’s final appearance with either a glossy or matt finish. I do love working in oils, they add such vibrancy and depth to a portrait. Beautiful rich colours that really brings your subjects to life.
Other questions
Stylised? Bespoke? Traditional? Contemporary?
Sizing?
Is it a gift? Or for your home?
Where is the portrait going to be shown? Do you want it to co-ordinate with colours in a room location?
Maybe add a coloured background panel that will make it fit in perfectly!
Don’t feel overwhelmed, this is where I can advise and hopefully narrow down these options to best suit your requirements.
Step Two – Photographs
I like to work from good quality photographs as high resolution images are key for a portrait I would need clear in focus photographs from you.
If you are taking photographs specifically for your portrait then please take as many as you can, preferably in natural daylight. This will then capture the best detail and colour from your subject. It’s a good idea to have treats at the ready and try to photograph your subject ‘on a level’ in line with their eyes so you catch their expression, full head and nose to the best advantage. If you live in the South West area of the UK I am happy to take these photographs for you, this can be arranged.
Step Three – Let’s get started
You can use the form on the contact page or email me at art@judepeaceportraits2023.co.uk. I am always available to discuss new projects or existing. I will try and help you throughout the process best I can. It’s really that easy!

Step Four – Enjoy Your Portrait!
Once your portrait is complete we can discuss mounts and framing, I can arrange all this for you.
Also now is the time to think about extra prints or cards. Even if you don’t need them at this point I would need to scan the portrait so prints and cards can be produced at a later date. Please mention this to me if it’s something you may like in the future.
Upon receiving your portrait safely either via Special courier ( or on some occasions if not too far I can deliver ) and you are completely satisfied I would love some feedback so I can share on social media , I would be very grateful. You can follow me on Instagram / Facebook etc to view updates and maybe spot your portrait along the way! I add all new and current work and always appreciate comments & feedback.
